(2/4) “In the hospital I noticed her tongue tie right away. I put my finger in her mouth and had her suck on it and all I could feel were her gums instead of her tongue. She was just biting on my finger instead of sucking. I had seen and heard about tongue ties before, so for it to be that clearly identifiable straight away, concerned me. I had a hard time getting her to latch, the pediatrician snipped her tongue right there in the room but it wasn’t very deep of a cut. I got in contact with another doctor here in Portland who is really an expert with tongue ties, and after the first week of mainly bottle and finger feeding we were able to see the doctor and get her to start latching with a SNS and nipple shield. She transferred maybe 10mm from my breast. I eventually got her able to breastfeed, but she still hated it. She would cry through every nursing session. The consultant would say “wow, she’s a great communicator” and all I could think was “yeah, she’s communicating that she doesn’t like this”. So after about 8 weeks or so, knowing I would be going back to work at 12 weeks and would still be pumping and bottle feeding, I decided to let it go and pump exclusively.”
