(1/4) “Probably like most moms, I thought breastfeeding was going to be easy and natural and just come to me. My mom has been really involved in the breastfeeding initiatives at the hospital where I gave birth to both my kids, and has really advocated for making breastfeeding available to everybody. So I just kind of thought ‘oh, this is going to be a walk in the park.’ And then my son was born, and he didn’t latch. Being a new mom, it was super scary and intimidating. Within the first couple days after he was born, he was losing weight. I was working with lactation consultants, but nothing was really clicking. They started to suggest different tools to help. So I started pumping after every feeding, then supplementing with the syringe. I was using the nipple shield to try to get him to latch with that. I was exhausted; it was awful."
