(2/6) B: “When we decided to have our third baby, it occurred to me that maybe my wife would want to nurse the baby too, which would greatly help given my low supply. It took a while for us to find a supportive medical provider during my pregnancy to help her induce lactation. She is transgender, and was already able to express a few drops of milk due to hormone therapy, and that’s part of what gave us the idea to really try to induce lactation. Originally, her doctor told her that she should not be lactating and that it was a negative side effect of her hormone therapy. Her doctor was adamant this was a bad thing, and wanted to reduce her hormone dosages to prevent it. “
A: “She didn’t give any medical reason why I couldn’t feed my baby. I walked out of there just crushed… You know, I think even people who specialize in trans medicine or people in the trans community sometimes have transphobic thoughts and emotions.”
Starting 14 November, Transgender Awareness Week helps raise the visibility of #transgender gender non-conforming people, and address the issues the community faces. #transweek
