(1/2) “I'm one of those people fortunate enough to have an oversupply. I didn't breastfeed my first child for a combination of reasons: my of age, lack of knowledge, and an extremely difficult postpartum recovery. I wasn't worried about being able to breastfeeding my second child though, due to the 4 months it took for my milk dry out after my first baby was born. I know the suggestion is to wait until six weeks to start pumping, so your supply can regulate, but I started with just one pumping session a day at two weeks postpartum because I was uncomfortable and engorged all the time. I also wanted to start building up a supply for when my maternity leave was over. Oversupply can be a double edged sword, but I never want to make any mother feel inadequate by hearing about my excessive supply, and I certainly won't complain. I am 7 months into my breastfeeding journey, and I'm still frequently engorged. I leak all day long and can't ever be without breast pads. I envy co-sleeping mamas who are able to just sleep with their breast out for baby to snack on. If I did that, I'd wake up swimming in a pool of milk and we would both be soaked. I truly don't see it as a problem though, and am extremely grateful for my body’s ability to produce so much milk. I feed my baby without worry and have the good fortune to be able to help other mamas and babes in need through donating milk.”
