(1/4) “I started breastfeeding my son because my husband was a student and we were really poor. I was afraid I couldn’t afford formula. So in the beginning, it was purely a financial decision. When my son was born, the lactation consultant at the hospital had just quit. It was a small town in the middle of nowhere and there was zero support, unless I wanted to drive 90 minutes to the next town. So I started a Facebook group to get information. He was having a hard time latching, so I was pumping and feeding with a syringe. I wanted to find other local moms and get advice, to be able to meet them, and have them help. I really wanted it to work. I came to find out there was a lot of need in the community. The Facebook group now has over 300 members, and we work with lactation consultants. I found more support in the community and really helped moms that way. So as my journey progressed, it went from being a financial decision, to being something really important to me. I became a breastfeeding advocate, and my goal became to breastfeed for two years. We went to two and a half before we weaned.”
