My name is Ashlan Taylor and I'm behind the camera at Portland Birth Stories. It's important as a birth photographer that you feel at ease and comfortable being yourself around me. As a witness to some of my clients most raw and vulnerable lifetime moments, I try to find a blend of approachable yet invisible while working. While you are focused on the life changing work of birth, my camera will be there with you, helping capture all the details that would otherwise long be forgotten. Feel free to call me, we can drink a cup of tea together and see if we would be a good fit.
A bit about myself... I graduated with a photography degree from Kington University in London, England. I have since been lucky enough to work as both a journalist photographer, and the resident photographer for the Federal Reserve here in US over the last decade. Now, as a mother to two young children, I have turned my passion for photography toward the awe inspiring experience that is birth and motherhood. I fall in love with the raw beauty and strength of every birth story I am lucky enough to witness. My goal is to create timeless images, that are just as unique as the wonderful birth story being photographed and provide high quality images that can be cherished for decades and generations to come.
I'm also following my passion with the 2016 founding of 'The Milk Stories', a photoblog/instagram account that celebrates and unites women in all the highs and lows that come with feeding our young. I built The Milk Stories after feeling very isolated in my own breastfeeding struggles as a new mother, and aim to develop a space that allows others to feel less alone. It's my dream to be able to take 'The Milk Stories', on the road at some point in the future; highlighting cultural, geographical and historical influences that shape this generation of mothers as we navigate motherhood. Monthly sessions currently take place in Washington and Oregon.
Back-up in birth photography is important. Not just for our clients but for our families too! I believe it's important you get to know anyone who could potentially be at your birth if it's what you need to feel good. While I have never missed a birth here at Portland Birth Stories (formally Ashlan Taylor Photography), my BFF Jenny also happens to be a wonderful birth photographer (handy, right?!). She and I have partnered our businesses to ensure reliable back-up for every birth. We both have attended dozens of birth stories in the Portland Metro area over the last several years and are as passionate about birth as we are photography.
We actively partner within each others businesses to ensure you know both potential photographers before hand and are comfortable. It's important to both of us that we are able to ensure you that no matter what, 24/7 for the whole on-call period, that a reliable and well trained birth photographer you are comfortable with will be arriving at your birth when the moment comes.
A former Michigander that has fallen in love with Portland. I started my journey into photography and birth work after having my first son, Calvin. I was bit by the 'birth bug' became a doula in early 2013. Soon after, i decided to combine my passions for photography and birth - and that's how i became a documentary photographer. I truly believe documentary photography is where it's at. And i'm gonna be real honest with you right now so listen up; your kids are my clients. I'm creating these memories for them. when they grow up and have kids of their own, they'll want to see what you looked like when they were born. I can guarantee you'll walk away with treasured memories you can hand down for generations to come.
